10 steps to prepare a Marathon: Step 3 Picking the right program: Custom programs

24 weeks custom program for Boston Marathon (4 weeks training log)
Tip 3: Custom programs

Custom programs are designed by coaches and customized to your training needs.

Prices are more expensive and you will have to make sure which kind of program is sold to you (what format, how detailed it is, what services and tips, and of course, what price).

The best thing about those programs? They are more fitted to your level of performance.
A good website/coach should ask you those basic questions:
  •     How many times a week do you train/run?
  •     What is your running background (PR, races, running experience…)?
  •     Usual mileage run per week?
  •     How much is your longest run?
  •     And of course what is your target time/race day?
Asking for your schedule, motivation, how long you can train/run (especially during week days), if you have been injured in the past, and so on, should fine tune a better training molded to your needs and goal(s).

Those programs are designed for you and you only; there should be a weekly follow-up and training update, depending on how went your training, and the kind of feedback(s) you sent to the coach.

Of course, if the coach knows you very well, he will be able to build a 3 to 4 weeks program with few updates only.
If you can’t have a personal coach onsite (very expensive), it is, in my opinion, one of the best way to have a good training plan fitted to your goal(s) and running background.
It’s a very good deal for experienced runners, but can be a great deal for beginners since you will have tip-top information and advices, to start from scratch without the usual mistakes leading to injury and out of shape races.

Overall this is probably the best combination you can get on the web.
