It’s kind of the same problem then training with
a group, except that you are running in a structured environment, with a coach
and leveled groups.
The good thing is that the coach is supposed to
build different groups in his team depending on athletes’ abilities. So you can fit in one of these.
The only one important thing is to make sure you
found the right club, but mainly the right coach.
It’s the best way (and cheap one) to get a
program fitted to your needs and goals, with the daily (or almost) coach’s eyes
for a cheap price.
But it’s very tricky to find a good one, because
the best coaches… coach professionals or have a business online.
But with a little smart research, you can find
the right spot.
Go to the Regional Association website, and find
a list of all the clubs with contacts and website address.
Basically, if the club registered less then 20 athletes…
forget it.
Also, make sure they don’t coach kids only.
Finally, check out which distances are coached;
might be Track only for instance.
Look at the results to make sure the team is a little
bit competitive; being a Beginner does not mean you don’t need a good coach.
Feel free to call the manager/coach and go for a
run or two with them so you will make your mind about the coaching, the
training, and the atmosphere.
Talk with the coach and the athletes; what’s his
training philosophy, which kind of training he is providing, what does he
expect from you, do you have to come everyday, does he provide a training log
so you can do some run on your own, and so on…
Once you picked up your club, you are ready to go!!!
